オメガ３脂肪酸を豊富に含んだフィッシュオイルは近年欧米で大人気だが、この度の研究では妊娠中期から後期にかけてフィッシュオイルのサプリメントを摂取していた母親から生まれた子供は、「視覚と手指の協調運動機能」が他の子供より発達することが新たに判明した。
出産前のフィッシュオイル・サプリメンテーションは、新生児の「視機能」の発達に大きな効果をもたらすことが、他の研究によって証明されている。そして今回、アレルギーに対するフィッシュオイル・サプリメンテーションの効果を調査する目的で、その研究は行なわれた。まず、アレルギー症状を抱えた妊娠中期の女性たちは、フィッシュオイル・グループと偽薬グループの２グループへと任意に振り分けられた。更に、フィッシュオイル・グループの被験者たちは毎日４ｇのフィッシュオイル入りカプセル(内ＤＨＡ-2.2g及びＥＰＡ-1.1g)を、偽薬グループの被験者たちは同量のオリーブオイル入りカプセルを、それぞれ出産までの20週間摂取したのである。母体のアレルギー症状の変化に注目していた研究者たちは、フィッシュオイル・グループの母親たちから生まれた子供たちの２歳半検診の結果を受け取り、想定外の事実を知ることとなった。その子供たちは、「視覚と手指の協調運動機能」の検査で、最高値を記録していたのである。
因みに「言語理解力」、「語句による表現力」、「語彙(い)力」の３つの検査項目に於いても、彼らは総じて平均値を上回っていたことが伝えられている。

Fish Oil Supplementation Benefits Newborns
Pregnant women who take fish oil supplements high in omega-3 fatty acids during the last 20 weeks of their pregnancies have children with greater hand-eye coordination, according to a new study.
Previous studies have shown that children who received the prenatal fish oil supplementation improved visual function. This time, the large study was conducted to investigate the effects of fish oil supplementation originally on “allergies.” The pregnant volunteers, all of whom had allergies, were randomly divided into two groups, a fish oil group and a placebo group. In the fish oil group, the women received 4 grams of fish oil which provided 2.2 grams of DHA and 1.1 grams of EPA per day. On the other hand, women in the placebo group received the same amount of olive oil placebo per day. The supplementation in both groups continued for 20 weeks until delivery. The unexpected result for the researchers, who had paid much attention to allergies of those mothers, was that babies of mothers in the fish oil group had the best hand-eye coordination when assessed at age 2 1/2 years.
Those children also had higher scores for receptive language, average phrase length, and vocabulary.
