先頃、難病である慢性リンパ性白血病の治療に、緑茶が救世主になるかもしれないとの研究報告が発表された。

慢性リンパ性白血病(CLL)は白血病の一種で、成熟リンパ球の増殖とリンパ節の腫れが特徴である。又、患者の殆どは高齢者が占める。時には潜伏期間が何年にも及ぶほどCLLの進行は遅く、その間は慢性疲労感以外に特に顕著な症状が無いことが多い。しかし、進行が及んだ数年後には結局死に至るという恐ろしい病気である。現状では、CLLを完治させる治療薬及び治療法は存在しない。

報告は発症後17～60ヶ月が経過した50代のCLL患者４例に関してのものであり、全員とも定期診断だけで特定のCLL治療は行っていなかった。この患者達は自ら緑茶療法を採り入れることを選択し、その摂取方法や服用量等も担当医の指導無しに各々の判断で決定した。毎日一定量の緑茶を服用するか緑茶サプリメントを摂取或いは併用するこの療法は、今回それぞれのケースに於いて著しい病状の改善を齎した。特に半数の患者に至っては、緑茶療法開始後10～15ヶ月以内に、肥大化したリンパ節が50％以上も縮小したことが確認されている。

今後の課題として、CLL患者に最も有効な服用量など緑茶療法の基準を確立するための更なる研究の成果が望まれる。

Green Tea Effective on Chronic Limphocytic Leukemia

According to a current report, green tea might be useful in the treatment of people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a type of leukemia characterized by high levels of lymphocytes and enlargement of lymph nodes, and most of the patients are elder people. CLL usually progresses very slowly, sometimes over years, without noteworthy symptoms other than intermittent fatigue. However, the symptoms increase after several years and CLL ultimately causes death. So far, no effective treatment for the disease has been found.

The report introduced four cases of patients between the age of 50 to 60 who had had CLL for 17 to 60 months prior to the study. They were monitored but not treated for CLL. They individually decided to use green tea and chose the form and amount without any guidance from their doctors. The green tea treatment -- drinking green tea or taking green tea supplements -- successfully improved the condition of the CLL patients. In two of the cases in particular, the enlargement of their lymph nodes decreased more than 50% in 10 to 15 months.

Now, further research should be done as soon as possible to determine the form and amount of green tea needed to achieve the greatest benefit in people with CLL.
