胃のバイパス手術 を行った後何年も経っているにもかかわらず、ビタミンＡの欠乏による｢夜盲症｣という手術の副作用がもたらされる恐れがあるとの報告が英国であった。
報告では、手術を行ったのは４４年前という最長者を筆頭に、かなり以前に胃のバイパス手術を受けた人たちが最近になって夜盲症に苦しんでいるという症例が幾つか紹介された。この手術は胃を小さくするために行われ、肥満者が増加傾向にある欧米で一般的に行われている。基本的に、胃の切除は栄養の吸収力を低下させるが、特に脂溶性ビタミンの欠乏症に陥り易い。ビタミンＡも脂溶性ビタミンの１つで、体内で免疫組織を健全に保ち、正常な細胞分裂を行うために必要とされ、中でも特に目の働きには欠かせない。今回の症例患者に対しても、医師たちはビタミンＡを含んだ抗酸化サプリメントを処方し、黄斑の変質退化や更なる視力減退を防いだ。
今後、眼科医たちは初診の問診時に｢過去に胃のバイパス手術をしたことがありますか？｣という項目を新たに設け、「ある」と答え且つ副作用について知らない者には、術後何年経過してもビタミンＡ欠乏症如いては夜盲症にかかるかも知れないという危険性について忠告する必要があるだろう。

Night Blindness Could be Surgery Side Effects
A recent report in the U.K. warns that vitamin A deficiency and night blindness may appear many years after gastric bypass surgery as side effects.
The new report introduced surprising cases of patients who had had gastric bypass surgery a long time ago--the longest was actually performed 44 years ago--and recently faced suffering from limited night vision. The purpose of having a gastric bypass is to make the stomach smaller, and the surgery is popular in the West where the number of people with obesity has been increasing. Basically, it is well known that abdominal surgeries can cause poor nutrient absorption, particularly deficiencies of fat-soluble vitamins. Vitamin A, one of the fat-soluble vitamins, is needed for a healthy immune system and normal call division throughout the body and is especially concentrated in the eye. The doctors of those patients prescribed antioxidant supplements which included vitamin A to them to prevent macular degeneration and more serious vision loss.
From now on, optometrists might have to ask their new patients whether they have a history of gastric bypass surgery. This would enable them to alert people who do not know the side effects of the surgery to the possibility of vitamin A deficiency far in the future.
